SUMMARY:The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams
DESCRIPTION:Join the SSN Bookclub online to discuss The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. \nSeconds before the Earth is demolished to make way for a galactic freeway\, Arthur Dent is plucked off the planet by his friend Ford Prefect\, a researcher for the revised edition of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy who\, for the last fifteen years\, has been posing as an out-of-work actor.  Together this dynamic pair begin a journey through space aided by quotes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide (“A towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have”) and a galaxy-full of fellow travelers: Zaphod Beeblebrox–the two-headed\, three-armed ex-hippie and totally out-to-lunch president of the galaxy; Trillian\, Zaphod’s girlfriend (formally Tricia McMillan)\, whom Arthur tried to pick up at a cocktail party once upon a time zone; Marvin\, a paranoid\, brilliant\, and chronically depressed robot; Veet Voojagig\, a former graduate student who is obsessed with the disappearance of all the ballpoint pens he bought over the years.  Where are these pens? Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time between wearing digital watches? For all the answers stick your thumb to the stars. And don’t forget to bring a towel!  \nIf you would like to join SSN book club\, get in touch with:  \n\nArtemi Tonikidou: a.tonikidou@lboro.ac.uk  \nKieron Lintott: K.Lintott@lboro.ac.uk   \nTaisiia Stankevych: S.Stankevych2@lboro.ac.uk  \n\n

SUMMARY:Creating Sustainable Advertising Practices
DESCRIPTION:If you are interested in learning about advertising and sustainability\, please sign up to join this event here https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/lboro/sustainability  \nIn this event Glykeria will shed light on how learnings from anthropology can be used in the advertising and other industries so that we will help each other while shifting into new more sustainable behaviours. If you have an interest in the advertising industry\, you have another reason to join us\, as Glykeria will share with us some best practices in sustainable ad production and examples of how data can help in this process and direction.  \nGlykeria Antonaki is the Purpose & Product Lead at MurphyCobb and Associates (MCA). MCA is the world’s only truly global advertising production consultancy business. Working in over 35 markets\, with industry leading technology and a worldwide team of over 100 specialist consultants\, we advise blue chip advertisers such as L’Oréal\, Mondelēz\, Heineken\, Ikea\, Kellogg’s\, and Colgate Palmolive how to optimise the spend they make when creating a wide range of advertising and communications content – TV\, posters and print\, web and social\, Ecommerce\, celebrities\, licensed music and events and activations\, among others. Glykeria has over 10 years of experience in the advertising industry. Before transitioning to sustainability in advertising\, Glykeria worked for MullenLowe Group advertising agency\, she co-founded and launched SlotApp social network with over 25K users in Greece and Cyprus in 2016 and she launched one of MCA’s Tech products globally as the product manager in 2019 that is still alive and successful till now and used by big client names. Glykeria has a BSc in marketing and communications from AUEB and a MSc in digital anthropology from UCL with a thesis very much focused on environmental anthropology studies. Glykeria is passionate about climate action so she didn’t stop there. She also trained herself in Sustainable ad production\, Carbon Accounting and Reporting and she came back from her maternity leave in 2023 with determination to combine her anthropologist background\, product management and sustainability expertise to help MCA and MCA clients towards a smoother transition to net zero.  \nThis event will be held in person and online.

SUMMARY:Heartstopper (Volume 1) by Alice Oseman
DESCRIPTION:Charlie\, a highly-strung\, openly gay over-thinker\, and Nick\, a cheerful\, soft-hearted rugby player\, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly\, but could there be something more…? Charlie Spring is in Year 10 at Truham Grammar School for Boys. The past year hasn’t been too great\, but at least he’s not being bullied anymore. Nick Nelson is in Year 11 and on the school rugby team. He’s heard a little about Charlie – the kid who was outed last year and bullied for a few months – but he’s never had the opportunity to talk to him. They quickly become friends\, and soon Charlie is falling hard for Nick\, even though he doesn’t think he has a chance. But love works in surprising ways\, and sometimes good things are waiting just around the corner…  \nIf you would like to join SSN book club\, get in touch with:  \n\nArtemi Tonikidou: a.tonikidou@lboro.ac.uk  \nKieron Lintott: K.Lintott@lboro.ac.uk   \nTaisiia Stankevych: S.Stankevych2@lboro.ac.uk  \n\nOnline

We’ll then explore other bus routes from there\, including rural bus routes and an open-top bus ride. We’ll be getting a heritage bus back to Loughborough around 5pm.  \nWe’ll have lunch at Quorn station. Feel free to bring a packed lunch or buy lunch from the cafe at the station. There may also be time to get an alcoholic drink from the bar at Quorn station or cross the road to the manor house pub if that would be of interest to the group.  \nThe buses are free to ride\, so you’ll only need to purchase a single ticket to Mountsorrel\, which we’ll get at the ticket office in Loughborough – these tickets should be inexpensive\, around £10 and the buses are free to ride\, although a small donation to support their upkeep would be appreciated!

SUMMARY:Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by John Le Carre
DESCRIPTION:A modern classic in which John le Carré expertly creates a total vision of a secret world\, Tinker\, Tailor\, Soldier\, Spy begins George Smiley’s chess match of wills and wits with Karla\, his Soviet counterpart. It is now beyond a doubt that a mole\, implanted decades ago by Moscow Centre\, has burrowed his way into the highest echelons of British Intelligence. His treachery has already blown some of its most vital operations and its best networks. It’s clear that the double agent is one of their own. But which one? George Smiley is assigned to identify him. And once identified\, the traitor must be destroyed.  \nOnline

SUMMARY:SSN Book club – Science in Joseph Wright’s Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Between 1765 and 1771 (under the influence of his friend Peter Perez Burdett)\, Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-97) created three major paintings with ‘scientific themes’: A Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrery\, A Bird in the Air Pump\, and The Alchymist. His use of dramatic chiaroscuro effects has led him to be dubbed Painter of Light by Benedict Nicholson and Painter of Darkness by Matthew Craske. Wright’s meticulous attention to detail tempts us to treat them as quasi-photographic records of actual events. How far can we take that idea? What was he trying to do\, and for whom? Do we now read these paintings differently from Wright’s contemporaries?  \nJonathan Powers was the first Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Derby and one of its first five Professors. His ‘professorial trade’ is Philosophy\, but he is also a Chartered Physicist. He was previously Dean of Humanities at Middlesex Polytechnic\, where he headed Degree Courses in three different Faculties. After retirement he became Project Champion for the Derby Multi-Faith Centre\, founder Chairman of the Derby Chamber Music Society\, and also chaired Derby Playhouse. Inter alia he has published more than twenty small monographs\, primarily on culturally significant figures associated with the East Midlands Enlightenme  \n Presenter: Emeritus Professor Jonathan Powers  \nOnline
