SUMMARY:GCR Heritage Bus Rally
DESCRIPTION:oin us for a day on heritage buses\, with routes in the countryside around Loughborough (including an open-top bus if the weather permits). We’ll be catching a train to Quorn\, where the bus rally is being held\, and get a train on the branch line to Mountsorrel and catch a bus back to Quorn. We’ll then explore other bus routes from there\, including rural bus routes and an open-top bus ride. We’ll be getting a heritage bus back to Loughborough around 5pm.  \nWe’ll have lunch at Quorn station. Feel free to bring a packed lunch or buy lunch from the cafe at the station. There may also be time to get an alcoholic drink from the bar at Quorn station or cross the road to the manor house pub if that would be of interest to the group.  \nThe buses are free to ride\, so you’ll only need to purchase a single ticket to Mountsorrel\, which we’ll get at the ticket office in Loughborough – these tickets should be inexpensive\, around £10 and the buses are free to ride\, although a small donation to support their upkeep would be appreciated!

SUMMARY:SSN Book club – Science in Joseph Wright’s Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Between 1765 and 1771 (under the influence of his friend Peter Perez Burdett)\, Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-97) created three major paintings with ‘scientific themes’: A Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrery\, A Bird in the Air Pump\, and The Alchymist. His use of dramatic chiaroscuro effects has led him to be dubbed Painter of Light by Benedict Nicholson and Painter of Darkness by Matthew Craske. Wright’s meticulous attention to detail tempts us to treat them as quasi-photographic records of actual events. How far can we take that idea? What was he trying to do\, and for whom? Do we now read these paintings differently from Wright’s contemporaries?  \nJonathan Powers was the first Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Derby and one of its first five Professors. His ‘professorial trade’ is Philosophy\, but he is also a Chartered Physicist. He was previously Dean of Humanities at Middlesex Polytechnic\, where he headed Degree Courses in three different Faculties. After retirement he became Project Champion for the Derby Multi-Faith Centre\, founder Chairman of the Derby Chamber Music Society\, and also chaired Derby Playhouse. This sustainable practice helps maintain a healthy and diverse woodland ecosystem.\nDead-Hedging- Contribute to the creation of dead hedges\, a natural barrier made from cut branches and logs. SUMMARY:Cadbury World and Sea Life Centre
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day trip to Cadbury world and Birmingham Sea Life centre. Learn about the famous chocolate brand whilst you explore their factory in Bournville\, outside Birmingham\, and visit the aquarium – the only one in the UK with sea otters (so cute!).\nWe’ll be catching a train around 9:15 Saturday morning so aim to meet at Loughborough mainline station for 9am.\nYou must purchase tickets to Cadbury World and the aquarium before coming\, by following the ticket link provided; these are £35 for both attractions\, saving £12 on purchasing tickets separately so it’s well worth the visits. Please book Cadbury world for 11:30 and the Sea Life centre for 15:00 (or the closest available time if those are booked up).\nAlso\, an off-peak train ticket to Bournville is required: these are around £17 with a railcard or £25 without one. We’ll be getting the 9:17 train from Loughborough and select the 17:50 return train although we’ll be picking up the 18:22 train from Birmingham New Street. Or you can make your own travel arrangements and meet us at these places at these times if you’ll be travelling by other means or only want to do one of the attractions (in which case only book a ticket for the attraction you want to visit).\nWe hope to see you there! DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Andreas will delve into the interconnectedness of the economy of wellbeing and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shed light on how these concepts are intricately tied to the cultivation of entrepreneurship skills. These skills serve as a linchpin in the overarching mission to tackle disparities and mitigate the impending climate crisis.\nAndreas Stefanidis is an experienced social entrepreneur\, president of the Educational Association of Athens HFAISTOS\, the Federation of Hellenic Associations of Young Entrepreneurs\, and the co-founder and president of the Academy of Entrepreneurship\, a non- profit organization which aims to create a healthier entrepreneurial environment on a national and European level. Academy of Entrepreneurship is a member of the Euclid Network and founding partner of the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN). Andreas is since 2014 the Accelerator Director of Aephoria.net host organisation of Bluegrowth accelerator of sustainable business ideas related to local sea and aquatic resources. He holds a degree in Business Administration with Major in Management Accounting and Minor in Economics from the State University of New York at New Paltz (1994)\, having graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors. He has also been certified as a trainer of adult non-formal education and for designing and teaching online courses from Rutgers University. DESCRIPTION:A hike to Rothley along the countryside near the GCR mainline\, so steam trains will be visible passing through the countryside throughout the hike. We’ll stop for lunch around the Swithlands reservoir and catch a steam train back to Loughborough in the afternoon (the train fare will be £9).\nDetails of the hike to come but you should bring a packed lunch\, some snacks and plenty of water to drink\, as well as some layers as there may be a chilly wind and some suitable walking shoes (some paths may be muddy so trainers may not be ideal in some places)
