PhD SSN Book Club

The Ph.D. SSN book club is a network that has been running since 2020 that engages doctoral researchers at Loughborough University to read books. This space welcomes people from different research disciplines, cultures, and identities to come together to read and talk about books.

The main idea is to motivate researchers further to read and engage with different styles of books and to have people to discuss them with.

The book club members select a book every month, followed by a discussion session. These sessions take place once per month, usually at 7 pm online.

The selection process for the books is as follows:

  1. Step 1: During the first week of the month, the book club members propose the theme they want to read; this can be anything! From popular genres, such as “classic sci-fi”, “horror”, to just a feeling you want from the book, like an “easy to read book”, “larger than lifestyle of book”. The proposing lasts until the Saturday of that week.
  2. Step 2: In the second week, the book club members vote for their three favorite themes, excluding the ones they proposed. The winner of the most popular theme gets a book. The voting lasts until the Saturday of that week.
  3. Step 3: In the third week, the club members propose up to three books that fit the winning theme. The process lasts until the Saturday of that week.
  4. Step 4: On the fourth week, the book club members vote for their favorite books and the discussion date. They can vote for up to 3 of their favorite books but exclude their own. The winner also gets a book!

Monthly meetings and book discussions

  • Every book proposed will have time to discuss what we like and don’t like about it, what the author(s) do great, and what we didn’t like about them!
  • The conversation usually occurs at 19:00, most of the time online.
  • Even if you didn’t finish the book or didn’t start it at all, it is a friendly and safe space to talk! Maybe you will discover that you want to read it even after the session! You could find yourself loving the book and wanting to talk about it forever (or if you dislike it and wish to complain about it), you will find like-minded people either way!
